Im Interview mit David Charrier habe ich mit ihm über sein einzigartiges Engagement und seine Liebe für die Handpan gesprochen.

Hallo David, könntest du dich bitte kurz vorstellen und uns erzählen, was du beruflich machst?
Hallo, ich bin David Charrier, ich bin 34 Jahre alt und lebe in Frankreich. Ich bin Diplom-Volkswirt und habe eine Ausbildung als Pflegeassistent absolviert. Ich bin auch Musiker, Performer, Lehrer und Gründer der MasterTheHandpan.com Online-Schule*.

Wie hast du die Handpan entdeckt?
Ich war bei einem Gleitschirm-Festival in der Nähe von Grenoble (Frankreich), als ich auf jemanden traf, der vor einer kleinen Menschenmenge ein Hang der ersten Generation spielte. Das ist der Tag, an dem ich mich in das Hang verliebt habe. Ich werde nie vergessen, welche tiefgreifende Wirkung es auf mich hatte, als ich es hörte. Ich hatte das Instrument meiner Träume gefunden!
Wie hast du gelernt, Handpan zu spielen, wenn man bedenkt, dass es zu diesem Zeitpunkt wahrscheinlich keine Lehrer und sicherlich keine Online-Kurse und Tutorials gab?
Ich bekam 2004 mein erstes Hang und etwa zur gleichen Zeit gelang es auch meinem Cousin Sylvain Paslier, ein Hang zu bekommen. Da es keine Handpanlehrer gab, verbrachten wir Stunden und Stunden beim Spielen, Busking und gemeinsamen Entdecken unserer Instrumente. Also, im Grunde genommen bin ich Autodidakt durch Hunderte von Stunden Übung!

Was macht die Handpan für dich so besonders? Worin unterscheidet sie sich vom Spielen anderer Instrumente? Warum hast du dich für die Handpan entschieden?
Ich begann im Alter von 12 Jahren Gitarre zu spielen und dann Percussion auf praktisch allem, was einen Sound macht, einschließlich Udu, Cajon, Djembe und Darbuka. Der Hauptunterschied beim Spielen von Handpans ist, dass ich mich stundenlang beim Spielen verlieren kann, ich finde es völlig faszinierend. Als melodisches und perkussives Instrument mit unterschiedlichen Noten, die mit den Händen gespielt wurden, war es perfekt für mich und ich habe nie zurückgeschaut!

Wie lange unterrichtest du schon Handpan? Wie hast du vor der Zeit von „Master The Handpan“ Unterricht gegeben?
Seitdem ich anfing, Handpan zu spielen, wollte ich das, was ich lernte, mit anderen teilen. Ein entscheidender Moment für mich war das erste HangOut UK im Jahr 2008, als ich rund 20 andere Handpanspieler traf und realisierte „wow! Ich kann das wirklich“ und das hat mich motiviert, auf eine besser „strukturierte“ Art und Weise zu unterrichten. So begann ich, Einzelunterricht in Person und auf Skype zu geben und reiste weltweit, um Workshops zu geben.

Wie bist du auf die Idee gekommen, einen Online-Kurs anzubieten?
Im Jahr 2016 und erst kürzlich geheiratet, forderte die ständig wachsende Nachfrage nach Unterricht, Workshops und all den Reisen ihren Tribut von mir. Ich war müde und frustriert. Ich musste es etwas langsamer angehen, aber ich wollte trotzdem meine Leidenschaft für den Handpan-Unterricht teilen. Ich hatte die Idee eines Online-Kurses, als ich mit Freunden darüber plauderte, wie ich meine Arbeitsbelastung bewältigen könnte, ohne zu implodieren! So habe ich MasterTheHandpan.com* erstellt. "Master The Handpan" und das super hilfreiche Notationssystem
Wie lange hast du gebraucht, um die Kurse zu produzieren? Was war der schwierigste Teil? Hattest du mit besonderen Problemen zu kämpfen?
Ich habe lange Zeit damit verbracht, das Konzept, den Inhalt und das Notationssystem zu entwickeln. Ich habe das System über 2 Jahre mit Studenten in Workshops getestet.
Dann habe ich etwa 9 Monate lang Tag und Nacht gearbeitet, 280 Videos für die Veröffentlichung von „Essentials“ und „Go Further“ in Englisch und Französisch gedreht und geschnitten.
Die größte Herausforderung für mich war es, die Kurse mit jeder Skala und Anzahl von Noten kompatibel zu machen. Ich muss sagen, dass es perfekt funktioniert.

Es tut mir leid, aber das ist streng geheim – wenn ich dir das sagen würde, müsste ich dich töten! Haha! Im Ernst, als Old School Handpanspieler habe ich es geliebt, die Gemeinschaft wachsen zu sehen, und ich möchte ein Teil davon bleiben und weiterhin meine Leidenschaft teilen. Ich habe einige tolle Projekte in der Pipeline.

Bietest du neben den MTH-Kursen auch andere Unterrichtsformen an?
Zufälligerweise kommt heute Abend eine kleine Gruppe von Spielern zu mir nach Hause, um sich zu treffen und einen Aperitif zu genießen :), aber wie ich bereits sagte, gebe ich keinen Einzelunterricht mehr, damit ich mich auf die MTH-Onlineschule konzentrieren kann.

Du bist wahrscheinlich der berühmteste Handpanlehrer der Welt. Aber du bist auch Musiker. Du hast viele Handpan-Konzerte gegeben und Alben produziert. Kannst du mir ein wenig über deine Musik erzählen? Wie würdest du sie beschreiben?
Nun, vielen Dank für deine freundlichen Worte. Heutzutage bin ich hauptsächlich Lehrer, aber obwohl ich weniger Auftritte habe, spiele ich immer noch gelegentlich auf Handfestivals, Konzerten und anderen Veranstaltungen.
Auch wenn ich einige unglaubliche Möglichkeiten ablehnen musste, bereue ich meine Entscheidung, mich auf MTH zu konzentrieren, nicht. Es ist nicht immer einfach, die richtige Work-Life-Balance zu finden, und es müssen Entscheidungen getroffen werden. Außerdem bin ich gerade ein Vater geworden, was eine glückliche neue Verschiebung der Prioritäten mit sich bringt!
Ich liebe es immer noch zu komponieren, zu spielen und aufzutreten und wenn das „Learn from the best“-Projekt abgeschlossen ist, werde ich ein neues Album veröffentlichen, an dem ich derzeit in meiner „Freizeit“ arbeite.

Could you please introduce yourself and tell us about what you do?
Hi, I’m David Charrier, I’m 34 and I live in France. I have a degree in economics and trained as a care assistant. I’m also a musician, performer, teacher and the founder of MasterTheHandpan.com online school*.

How did you discover the handpan?
I was at a paragliding festival near Grenoble (France) when I came across someone playing a 1st gen Hang to a small crowd of people. That’s the day I fell in love with the Hang. I’ll never forget the profound effect it had on me when I heard it, I had found the instrument of my dreams!
How did you learn to play handpan given that at the time there were probably no teachers and certainly no online courses and tutorials?
I got my first Hang in 2004 and at around the same time my cousin Sylvain Paslier also managed to get a Hang. As there were no handpan teachers, we spent hours and hours playing, busking and discovering our instruments together. So, basically I’m self-taught through hundreds of hours of practice!

What makes the handpan so special to you? How does it differ from playing other instruments? Why did you choose the handpan?
I started playing guitar at the age of 12 and then percussion on practically anything that made a sound, including udu, cajon, djembe and darbuka. The main difference when I play handpan is that I can get lost in playing for hours, I find it completely mesmerising. As a melodic and percussive instrument with distinct notes played with the hands, it was perfect for me and I never looked back!

How long have you been teaching handpan? How did you give lessons before „Master The Handpan“?
Ever since I started playing handpan, I wanted to share what I was learning with others. A pivotal moment for me was at the first HangOut UK in 2008 (An interview with the HangOut OK David made) when I met around 20 other handpan players and realised “wow! I can really do this” and it made me want to start teaching in a more ‘structured’ way. So, I started giving one-to-one lessons in person and on Skype and travelling worldwide to give workshops.

How did you come up with the idea of offering an online course?
In 2016 and recently married, the ever-increasing demand for lessons, workshops and all the travelling was taking its toll on me. I was tired and frustrated. I needed to slow down but I still wanted to share my passion for teaching the handpan. I came up with the idea of an online course whilst chatting to friends about how to cope with my workload without imploding! That’s how I created MasterTheHandpan.com*. How long did it take you to produce the courses? What was the hardest part? Did you have to deal with special problems?
I spent a long time coming up with the concept, content and notation system. I tested the system over 2 years with students during workshops.
Then I worked day and night for around 9 months, filming and editing 280 videos for the release of „Essentials“ and „Go Further“ in both English and French.
The biggest challenge I faced was making the courses compatible with any scale or number of notes. I have to say that it works perfectly.

How will the MTH courses evolve? What are your plans for the future of MTH?
I’m sorry but that’s top secret- if I told you I’d have to kill you! Haha! Seriously though, as an old school handpan player I have loved watching the community grow and I want to stay a part of it and continue sharing my passion. I have some great projects in the pipeline.

Do you offer other teaching formats besides the MTH courses?
It just so happens that this evening I have a small group of players coming to my home to for a gathering and apéritif 🙂 but, as I said earlier I no longer give individual lessons so that I can focus on MTH online school.

You’re probably the most famous handpan teacher in the world. But you are also a musician. You have given many handpan concerts and produced albums. Can you tell me a bit about your music? How would you describe it?
Well, thank you so much for your kind words. These days I mostly wear my teacher’s hat but although I’ve slowed down on the performance side, I do still occasionally play at handpan festivals, concerts and other venues.
Even though I’ve had to turn down some incredible opportunities I don’t regret my decision to concentrate on MTH. It’s not always easy to strike the right work/life balance and choices have to be made. Also, I’ve just become a dad which is bringing a happy new shift in priorities!
I still love composing, playing and performing and once the „Learn from the best*“ project has finished I will be releasing a new album that I’m currently working on in my ‘spare time’.

Honestly, I find it really difficult to describe my music- just listen to hear me play with my soul and feel my love for melodies. First I play for myself and if something moves me then I want to share it with other people.
